Maxime Tardif designed Earth in Quebec City as a love letter to the planet. Its Kickstarter funded in two hours, it came out on Earth Day 2023, the first print run sold out almost at once, and it went on to win the year's biggest awards.

Before your first game
A card-driven "tableau-building" game: everyone grows their own 4 × 4 island of plants, terrains and ecosystems. On your turn you pick one of four actions — plant, compost, water or grow — and every other player gets a smaller version of it too, so the whole table plays all the time. It's for 1 to 5 players, ages 13+, and takes 45 to 90 minutes.
Not at all. There are only four actions, and most people are comfortable halfway through their first game. The depth comes from the combos between cards — which is why it won Medium Game of the Year: easy to start, satisfying to master.
Animal Kingdom if you want more variety: 36 animals with wooden pieces and their own abilities. Abundance if you want more interaction, a sixth player or team play. Can't choose? The Complete World bundle has the base game and both, and saves 15% on all three.
